People went crazy over candy corn in the 1880′s because the three layer colors in a single piece of candy was revolutionary. Given that most of the nation’s people were farmers, they marveled at its likeness to a piece of corn. Since candy making was not automated back then, it was made between the months of March and November.

Candy corn is made from corn syrup, sugar and honey, mixed with water and formed into a slurry. A cream confection is added for texture and marshmallows provides a soft bite. The final heated mixture is poured into shaped molds. Three passes are required during the pouring process, one for each colored section.

Nowadays nearly 8.3 billion candy corn kernels, or roughly 20 million tons, are sold every year with 80% of which being sold during the months of September and October!
